Mount Stromlo Observatory Tour

Date: Monday 29 January 2018
Time: 8.30am – 12noon (bus departure from the National Library of Australia)
Cost: $25 per person (includes bus transfers and tour guide)
Capacity: 30 people

Join the Australian National University (ANU) Heritage Officer Amy Jarvis and ANU Project Manager Tim Borough on a walk and talk around the historic Mt Stromlo Observatory.

Established in 1924, the Observatory was subject to two major fire events, most recently the 2003 Canberra bushfires. The Commonwealth Heritage Listed Observatory suffered devastating loss of its historic telescopes and infrastructure. Since the fires the ANU has been rebuilding its research facilities on the site. In 2013, almost 10 years to the day after the Mt Stromlo fires, the Siding Spring Observatory (another ANU research facility located near Coonabarabran, NSW, was affected by an equally savage firestorm. Thankfully, Siding Spring had learnt much from Mt Stromlo experience and survived predominantly unscathed.

Amy and Tim will give us insight into the site’s fascinating history, the impacts of the fires, the process of recovery and rebuilding and the innovative approaches taken to restoration, interpretation, education and fire prevention.

Using the Mt Stromlo and Siding Spring case studies, a workshop and panel session will be offered in the afternoon that will consider disaster risk management planning for heritage places, potential disaster impacts and recovery. Please refer to the Workshops page for further information regarding this workshop.
